About Lip Fillers

Blog by Dr Rashidy, Cosmeticine

Dermal fillers are amongst the most common non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the UK. Lip enhancements, cheek enhancements, jaw line shaping and under eye circle treatments are just some examples of areas that can be treated with dermal fillers.

In this blog post, I am going to talk to you about lip enhancements. If you are considering having lip fillers and want to know more, I am going to answer some key questions about lip fillers in this blog post.

About lip fillers

Lip filler treatments can help define and sharpen borders, as well as smooth and hydrate your lip area. Beautifully shaped lips are all about balance. An experienced medical practitioner can identify the upper to lower lip ratio, improve definition, increase hydration, and create subtle volume.

How long do lip fillers last?

Most dermal fillers will degrade over time and are temporary. The average amount of time they will last is 12 -18 months.

How much filler is used?

How much filler is used depends on initial individual assessment and the desirable outcome required. It is usually between 1-2mls that is needed.

Are lip fillers right for me?

Reasons that you may choose lip filler include:

– To define and sharpen borders
– Wanting a fuller looking smile
– To enhance volume loss

An experienced medical practitioner can identify the upper to lower lip ratio, improve definition, increase hydration, and create subtle volume.

How do dermal fillers work?

When the dermal filler is injected into the lips, it draws in water and moisture to plump-up and hydrates them. The hyaluronic acid in fillers will mesh into lip tissues, giving them smoother texture and more plumped and younger look.

Is the procedure painful?

The procedure may be uncomfortable but is not usually painful after using topical local anaesthetics.

How long do dermal fillers take to inject?

The total appointment and procedure time will be approximately 45 minutes.

Before and after your appointment

  • It is best to arrange the lip fillers when there is no local skin infection/inflammations like cold sores. It is better to avoid any medications like Aspirin and Ibuprofen that can increase chance of bruising, if medically right to do so.
  • Use clean cold compresses to reduce swelling. Avoid exposure to intense heat (sun lamp or sunbathing) or cold.

About the healing process

Your clinician will always discuss aftercare and a written leaflet is available too. After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, headache, tenderness, lump formation or itching at the injection site. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14–18 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.

You will see the full effect of lip fillers within one to two weeks of your dermal filler treatment.

Choosing an aesthetics practitioner

The important things to check when choosing an aesthetics practitioner are that they have appropriate medical knowledge, skills and are experienced with necessary training and competence in medical aesthetic procedures.

Lip filler brands

The lip filler brands used by Cosmeticine are Restylane, Juvéderm and Teosyal.

Are there risks and complications?

Risks are not common, however occasional swelling, bruising and rarely allergic reaction or delayed infection can occur.

How much are lip filler injections?

At Cosmeticine, the cost of lip enhancements, using 1ml of dermal filler is £300.

Where can I get lip fillers near me?
